Cycle purchase schemes
Thinking about upgrading your commute, investing in an e-bike, or purchasing a higher-spec bike? Good news - the maximum value available through our Cycle2Work Scheme has increased from £2,000 to £4,000 for new applications.
This gives colleagues access to an even wider range of bikes and cycling equipment, making it easier than ever to choose the right option for your commuting and lifestyle needs.
Through salary sacrifice, you'll spread the cost through your pay while benefiting from Income Tax and National Insurance savings.
Please note: The £4,000 limit applies to new applications only. Existing agreements will continue under their original terms.
Cycle2Work is a Government-backed salary sacrifice scheme designed to encourage healthier, more sustainable travel. By hiring a bike and cycling equipment through the scheme, you can make savings on Income Tax and National Insurance while spreading the cost through monthly salary deductions.
The scheme can help you save money, improve your wellbeing and reduce your environmental impact by making cycling a regular part of your commute.
You can hire a cycle and cycling equipment through the Council, choosing a package worth between £100 and £4,000. Repayments are taken directly from your salary over the hire period through salary sacrifice. Because the deductions are taken before tax and National Insurance are applied, you can make savings compared to purchasing the bike outright.
At the end of the hire agreement, the Council may allow you to take ownership of the cycle at its fair market value. Please note that any arrangements regarding the purchase of the bike at that time will be subject to a separate agreement. For example, if you choose a bike and safety equipment worth £400 and are a basic-rate taxpayer, you could save up to £128 on the total cost. Higher-rate taxpayers may save even more. Actual savings will depend on your individual tax and National Insurance circumstances.
