Universal provision in school refers to the provision and support available to all pupils across all areas of school life. This includes a school’s physical environment, culture and ethos, systems and high-quality teaching. When a school focuses on strengthening their universal provision it helps to create a more inclusive, accessible and equitable learning environment for all.
A focus on enhancing relationships and building resilience is important to ensure that all children and young people can develop, learn and thrive in school. Research suggests that when schools prioritise and invest in the emotional wellbeing of their pupils it leads to a wide range of positive outcomes such as inclusion, engagement, attendance and attainment.
Schools should firstly identify strengths and areas for development using the Relational Approaches Audit and implement any actions or next steps for strengthening their whole-school provision. This should be reviewed regularly and ideally inform part of your school development plan.
Resilience is the flexibility to bounce back from adversity. When talking about resilience we find the ‘Resilience Framework’ is an incredibly helpful tool to support universal approaches in schools. The framework is comprised of ideas and approaches taken from the research that aim to promote resilience.
