Abandoned properties
Unfortunately, sometimes tenants leave their properties without telling us.
It may be some time before we find out. This means that someone on our waiting list must wait longer before they get a home, and it means that the property may attract vandalism or anti-social behaviour.
Please tell us if you spot an empty property, whether it’s one of ours or one that’s privately owned. The sooner we know about it, the sooner we can do something about it. You can tell us anonymously, but if you give us your details, we’ll be able to update you about what is happening.
When you tell us about a property that may have been abandoned, we’ll visit it and check who owns it. We’ll then arrange for it to be re-let if the tenant isn’t coming back.
It can take a long time, often a few months, to try and trace the owner. But once we know who owns the property, we’ll ask for their cooperation to bring it back into use and deal with any issues such as fly-tipping, broken windows and overgrown hedges and lawns.
